Not about this game but Chaos.
I could not remember the name of this game for a long time. I used to love it and played it multiplayer with my friend during elementary school on your Amiga computers. We even later bought the expansion disk with extra missions by sending money in an envelope.
I gonna now have to find a copy of Magic & Mayhem and try it out and relive my Chaos memories through it.

It's one of my absolute all-time-favorites - there are few other games that reach M&M's atmosphere and musical brilliance. Additionaly the play-style and concept are just great.

ghostgate2001 Classy game. I own the boxed release, but would happily buy it again on GOG just for the disc-free convenience. As people have said, the soundtrack (by Afro-Celt Sound System) is incredible. If, like me, you have the CD version of the game then (joy!) it's one of those game CDs that you can pop into any CD player and listen to the soundtrack just like a regular audio CD.
The game is basically "Chaos - The Battle of Wizards" (the revered 1985 ZX Spectrum turn-based strategy classic, from the chap who also created Laser Squad, XCOM, etc) except it plays in real-time and has an ongoing single-player campaign mode. In short: it's Chaos the RTS.
It might be called "Magic & Mayhem" or "Arcanes" or "Duel: The Mage Wars" (depending on your region) but the EXE file's name reveals its true title and lineage: CHAOS.EXE
It's not to be confused with "The Art of Magic : Magic & Mayhem" - which was a pretty darn poor third-party (Climax, IIRC) attempt at a 3D polygonal recreation of this game, released a couple of years later on the Virgin label. Frankly, the original release's bitmap graphics have aged FAR better, and the gameplay and soundtrack of the original blow its own "remake" out of the water, rendering the 3D remake utterly redundant. The 3D version is also excruciatingly slow and clumsy to play (even on modern PCs) and possesses none of the style or grace or playability of the bitmap version.
N.B. "Chaos" is now getting its own Kickstarter-funded reboot ("Chaos Reborn") from the original author, returning to the turn-based arena-duel format of the original ZX Spectrum game.
Meneldil I can't understand how this game got forgotten. I mean. I bought it in 98 or 99, right after its EU release. And man, what a blast. Everything was great about it : the plot, the awesome soundtrack (by Afrocelt soundsystem), the clay-like design, the gameplay.
Whenever I made other people try this game, they immediately fell in love with it. I can't think of a single of my friends who didn't enjoy it through and through. Even nowadays when someone wants to play a retro game, I'm like "You gotta try Arcanes (that's the french name) dude".
That'd be a day one purchase from me if GoG got it.

NickR Yet another vastly underrated game from the late '90s. Great music, great atmosphere and, owing to the mix&match design of its magic system (rather similar to that of Sacrifice), suprisingly high replayability for a strategy-adventure game.

It has all: wonderful graphics, INCREDIBLES atmospheres, gameplay and a soundtrack made by "Afro Celt Sound System" (Peter Gabriel is their producer!). Maybe it's not the most voted, but it has so much class...

UncleSpell I second the "most underrated game" comment. I loved it when I played it, long time ago, yet I don't know a single soul that is aware of this game's existence. This would be a brilliant entry to GOG's library.

Meneldil Probably the *most underrated* game I've ever played. I know, I know, lots of people say this for any game they liked that are usually considered bad. Thing is, after making many friends try it, they all liked/loved it. Even a couple months ago, I made someone discover it and he was like "wth? I never heard of this, and yet it's awesome". Even the critics kinda liked it back then. Too bad it was an unknown game with no advertising releasing inbetween Baldur's Gate, Total Annihilation and what not. I doubt it'll ever pop up on GoG (which is sad, given the amount of downright terrible games released on the site), but heh, it's worth a shot.
